India’s best cafés, for coffee and for work.

75 rooms in 7 cities, each scored for the cup, the quiet, the Wi-Fi, and how long you can sit with a laptop.

I have spent a lot of my working life at other people’s tables. I know which Starbucks will let me sit for four hours and which Blue Tokai has a plug by the window, and I know that the best filter coffee in Bengaluru comes with no chair at all. This map is that knowledge, written down.

The scores are mine. I have sat in most of the Bengaluru rooms myself; for the other cities I have read the reviews closely and kept what people agree on. The Wi-Fi numbers are what people report, in megabits per second. Where I am wrong, the button in the corner tells me, and if you run one of these cafés, or one that should be here, leave a number and I will call you.

How I score a room

Wi-Fi, in Mbps
The download speed people report when they run a test at a table. Zero means there is none worth opening a laptop for. Speeds change with the crowd and the season, so treat the number as a rough one.
Work
How welcome a laptop is for a few hours: tables you can type at, plugs you can reach, and whether the staff start looking at you after the second coffee.
Quiet
Five is a room you can think in. One is a room you shout across. Filter coffee counters are usually a one, and they are not trying to be anything else.
Coffee
The cup itself, against the best cup I know in that city. A five means I would go for the coffee alone.
Barista
Whether the people behind the counter know their coffee and are kind about it. A five will talk you through a cup; a three will make it well and move on.
Room
Light, air, chairs, and whether you would take someone there.
