Your privacy.

You can read this journal without an account. This site does not add advertising trackers.

Analytics

Google Analytics counts visits and records which pages lead to orders and subscriptions, so I can see which city pages are useful. It sets its own cookies and receives a truncated IP address. It never receives your name, email address, or order details. Read Google’s privacy policy for details.

Subscriptions

When you subscribe, your email address is sent directly to Mailchimp to manage this journal’s mailing list. Askespresso readers are kept under an Askespresso tag in a shared audience. You can unsubscribe using the link in any email. Mailchimp handles signup confirmation and its own security checks.

Coffee orders and questions

When you order coffee, your name, email, phone number, delivery address, and coffee choices are stored in the Askespresso database (DigitalOcean, Bengaluru) so I can prepare and send your order. Grind questions are also stored there so I can reply. These details are not used to subscribe you to the journal.

If you pay online, Razorpay processes the payment. This website does not receive or store your card details. Your shopping bag and latte-art personal best are saved locally in your browser. You can choose to remember delivery details on this device for 30 days and remove them using “Forget my details” in the cart.

Accounts and saved orders

Clerk manages sign-in through email, phone, or Google. It is the same Askespresso account on this website and in the Android app. Signing in is optional. A secure, essential cookie remembers guest orders on this browser for 30 days. Account orders are linked to your Clerk account in the same database. You can choose to save this browser’s guest orders to your account from Your orders.

Your coffee preferences, and the coffee profile if you use the app, are kept with your account in Askespresso’s database, hosted by DigitalOcean in Bengaluru, so they are the same on every phone and browser you sign in on. Your preferences are also kept with your Clerk account so this website can show them. You can delete your account on Delete your data or in the app.

The coffees you mark as favourites, with the heart in the shop or in the app, are kept with your account in the same database, so they are the same on this website and in the app. Without an account they stay in this browser or on your phone, and join your account when you sign in. Deleting your account deletes them.

When you order while signed in, your account also keeps the delivery details of that order: your name, email, phone number, address, city, state, and PIN code. They are kept in the same database, and only the last order’s are kept, so checkout is filled in for you on this website and in the app. “Forget my details” in the cart removes them from your account as well as this browser. Deleting your account deletes them.

Clearing your browser data removes local delivery details, your bag, and access to guest orders on that browser. It does not delete order records needed for fulfillment. Sign in before leaving a shared device only if you intend to keep orders in that account.

The Android app

The app keeps your taste profile, your caffeine log, your bag, your delivery details, and your settings on your phone. On first launch it makes a random code for the phone. Only a scrambled form of that code is stored with your orders in the Askespresso database, so the orders you place appear in the app.

You can use the app without an account. If you sign in, with an email code or Google, the app links the phone’s scrambled code to your account: the orders you placed from the phone and its coffee profile move to your account, and the app shows your orders from this website too. The app keeps Clerk’s sign-in on your phone until you sign out.

The cafés you go to, the instant coffee you keep at home, and where you buy milk stay on your phone with your settings. The app can remind you when it is time for a cup; those reminders are planned on your phone.

If you connect your calendar, the app reads today’s events, their times and titles, on your phone to time your coffee. It never sends them anywhere and never writes to your calendar; a reminder opens in your calendar app for you to save.

If you connect Health Connect, the app reads last night’s sleep, today’s workouts, and your latest weight on your phone, and writes each cup you log as caffeine. This data is used only to plan your coffee and caffeine in the app. It is not sent to Askespresso or to anyone else, not used for advertising, and not sold. You can turn any of it off in Health Connect at any time.

Your café

Every order opens a café for you, a page at askespresso.com/cafe/ followed by your first name, and every bag’s label prints its address and a batch code. Askespresso keeps, for each coffee you order, the roast, the grind, the roast date, the batch code, the order it belongs to, and the town and state it was sent to. Until you type the batch code on the page, a visitor sees only your first name. After that, you choose whether visitors see your coffee, your planned day, and your town; your batch codes, roast dates, and bags are only ever shown to you.

Typing the batch code, or opening the café from your order on this website, keeps the code in a cookie on that browser for a year, so the page opens again without it. Your orders’ status and history are shown on your café only to you. If you keep the café on your account, only that account can change it. The day you plan on it is kept with the café (your wake and bed times, the times of your meetings without their titles, training, and how many cups) and printed on your next bag’s label. If you connect a calendar, its secret address is kept with the café and read only to find the start and end of the next day’s meetings; it is never shown again, and Disconnect deletes it. A calendar file you open on the page is read in your browser and never sent. An assistant connected to our MCP server can read your bag and your planned day only with both your café’s name and a batch code from your label. Deleting your account clears your café’s line, planned day, calendar address, and choices; the bags stay with your orders.

Ask Baba

When you ask Baba Budan, our coffee guide, a question in the app or on this website, your latest messages and your taste profile, never your calendar or health data, are sent to this website. When the question needs them, the website adds your latest orders and their status, the coffees you marked as favourites and the one you bought last, or the cafés from our guide for the city you named. On your café, it adds your bag and the day you planned there; on someone else’s, only what they show. It passes all of this to OpenRouter, which sends it to a provider that runs Z.ai’s GLM model, to write the reply. Only providers that do not keep or train on what they are sent are used.

Askespresso keeps each question you type, with the start of Baba’s answer and the roast or recipes it suggested, so you can see your questions again in the app and on this website. They are kept in Askespresso’s database with your account if you are signed in, or otherwise with the scrambled code for your phone or the guest cookie for this browser, and signing in moves them to your account. They are kept for up to a year, at most the latest 200, and are used to answer you and to improve Baba’s answers and our coffee. You can clear one or all of them in Ask Baba at any time; deleting your account or using “Delete my data” in the app deletes them too, and while “Keep it with Askespresso” is off in the app, questions asked there are not kept. The answers you tap from Baba’s suggestions are not kept. When you scan your brewer, the photo is sent once the same way to name the brewer and is not kept by Askespresso. A recipe search the app cannot read on its own is sent the same way. The frame on the camera finds objects on the phone itself. Read OpenRouter’s privacy policy for how it and its providers handle these requests.

If you report one of Baba’s replies, the app sends that reply, the reason you chose, your note if you add one, the message that led to the reply, and the app’s version to this website. The website passes them to Askespresso by email and Slack, with the first few characters of the scrambled code for your phone, and does not store them. Nothing else from the conversation is sent.

Your coffee profile

If you allow it in the app, the app sends your coffee profile to Askespresso, where it is kept in Askespresso’s database with your account if you are signed in, or with the scrambled code for your phone if you are not. It holds your name and your contact and delivery details if you have entered them; your taste answers and your brewer; the coffee last recommended to you and how much to order; your usual waking and bed times and how quickly caffeine wears off for you; how many cups and how much caffeine you logged a day over the past week, and your most frequent drink; an estimate of the coffee left at home, worked out on your phone from your bags and your cups: how many grams are left, how many grams you use a day, how many days that lasts and the day it runs out, and the roast and whether it is beans or ground; the recipes you liked or set aside; your latte art practice scores; the brewer the camera found; whether your calendar, Health Connect, and notifications are connected; how many orders you have placed and the last one; and the app’s version, language, and time zone.

Askespresso uses it to recommend coffee to you, to prepare your orders, and to improve the coffee it roasts. It never includes data from Health Connect or your calendar, only whether each is connected. You can turn the profile off in the app’s settings at any time, which deletes it and your questions to Baba.

“Delete my data”, under You and then Privacy in the app, removes everything the app keeps on your phone and deletes your coffee profile and your questions to Baba; your order records are kept for fulfilment and tax. Delete your data explains how to ask by email instead, and what is kept.
