Gifts for someone brewing coffee at home for the first time

The starter gift for a new home brewer: one forgiving brewer, one bag of a forgiving roast, and a card that gets them a good cup on the first morning.

When someone tells me they want to start making coffee at home, I want to hand them one thing, not a shelf. The shelf comes later, if it comes at all.

The first brewer should be forgiving. The first coffee should be forgiving too. And the first morning should end in a cup they like, or the whole habit dies before it starts.

Give one brewer, not three

A French press is my answer for most people: nothing to learn, no filters to run out of, and a full cup. An AeroPress is my answer for someone who lives alone and likes things fast. Either one, with a bag of medium roast and a card, is a complete gift.

The grinder can wait a month. When they start asking why the second week's coffee tastes flat, that is when you give the grinder.

  1. A French press

A glass jug with a plunger. Coarse coffee, hot water, four minutes, press.

The most forgiving brewer there is. Nothing to learn on the first morning, and it makes a full-bodied cup that most people like straight away.

    ₹1,000 to ₹3,500

  2. An AeroPress

A plastic cylinder with a plunger and a small paper filter. It brews in about a minute and cleans in ten seconds.

Fast, quiet, almost impossible to break, and it makes a clean, strong cup. The Go version packs into its own mug and fits in a laptop bag.

    ₹3,500 to ₹5,000

  3. A bag of my medium roast

Single-origin arabica from one farm in Karnataka, roasted at home after the order is placed.

The medium roast is the one that forgives. It works in a press, an AeroPress, a moka pot, and a machine, and a grind that is a little off does not ruin it. I ask for it to be ground for their brewer, so the first morning needs nothing else.

    ₹750 for 250 g, ₹1,200 for 500 g, shipping free in India

  4. A simple kitchen scale

Any digital scale that reads in grams. It does not need to read to a tenth of a gram yet.

The card in the box says 18 g of coffee and 300 ml of water. A scale is how they follow it, and it removes the guessing that makes the first week's coffee uneven.

    ₹500 to ₹1,200

  5. A hand grinder with steel burrs

A small mill you turn by hand. It takes about a minute to grind for one cup.

Ground coffee goes stale in days. Whole beans and a grinder are the single biggest step up in taste, bigger than any brewer. If they already have a grinder, skip this.

    ₹3,000 to ₹7,000

  6. A plain kettle with a spout

Any electric kettle. A gooseneck can come later, when they try pour-over.

Boiling water is enough for a French press or an AeroPress. Let the water sit a minute after the boil for the medium roast, and it is right.

    ₹1,000 to ₹2,500

Questions people ask

Why not an espresso machine?

Because a cheap one makes bad coffee and a good one costs more than a holiday, and both need a grinder that costs as much again. I have written a whole note on this. Start with a press.

Should the coffee be whole beans or ground?

Ground for their brewer, unless the grinder is in the same box. Ground coffee fades in a week or two, so I roast and grind it right before it ships.

What should they do on the first morning?

Follow the card: 18 g of coffee, 300 ml of water off the boil, stir, wait four minutes, press slowly. Then taste it before adding anything.
