Gifts for her, if she loves coffee

Coffee gifts for a wife, girlfriend, mother, or sister: one question to ask first, then a short list from a pour-over set to a bag roasted the week you give it.

This page and the one for him share most of a list, on purpose. The right coffee gift depends on how the person drinks coffee, not on who they are. What differs is the box at the end.

So ask her, or notice: does she drink coffee black, or with milk? Everything follows from that.

Black or milk?

If she drinks it black, or takes it with a little milk and no sugar, the pour-over dripper and the light roast are the gift. Ten quiet minutes, a clean bright cup, and the taste of the farm rather than of the roasting.

If she drinks a strong coffee with milk, go to the moka pot and the dark roast. Then read the page for him, because the box at the end of that page is her box.

  1. A pour-over dripper and paper filters

A cone that sits on a mug. Coffee goes in, hot water goes over it, and a clean cup drips through.

The clearest way to taste what is in a bean. Cheap, unbreakable in plastic, and it makes one perfect cup at a time.

₹700 to ₹2,500 for the dripper, ₹300 to ₹500 for a hundred filters

  2. A gooseneck kettle with temperature control

An electric kettle with a thin spout that lets you pour slowly and aim.

For pour-over, control of the water matters more than anything else. It also stops the water going to a boil for a light roast, which wants it a little cooler.

    ₹3,500 to ₹9,000

  3. A hand grinder with steel burrs

A small mill you turn by hand. It takes about a minute to grind for one cup.

Ground coffee goes stale in days. Whole beans and a grinder are the single biggest step up in taste, bigger than any brewer. If they already have a grinder, skip this.

    ₹3,000 to ₹7,000

  4. A good ceramic mug

A mug that is pleasant to hold, made by a potter rather than a factory.

The cup is the last thing the coffee touches. A handmade mug is a small gift that gets used every day of the year.

    ₹600 to ₹2,000

  5. A stovetop moka pot

The eight-sided aluminium pot from Italian kitchens. Water below, coffee in the middle, and steam pushes a strong coffee up into the top.

The closest thing to espresso without a machine, and it costs less than a dinner out. It makes a coffee that stands up to milk.

    ₹1,500 to ₹4,500

  6. A bag of my light roast

Single-origin arabica from one farm in Karnataka, roasted at home after the order is placed.

The light roast tastes of citrus, honey, and cocoa. It is the one I brew as a pour-over, and it is the roast that shows what a farm tastes like. If she takes milk, give the medium roast instead.

Questions people ask

She has never made pour-over. Is it too much to learn?

It is three steps: wet the filter, pour a little water and wait half a minute, pour the rest slowly. The card in the box gives the weights and the times. Most people make a good cup on the second try.

What if she only drinks coffee at cafés?

Then the AeroPress on the café page is the gift, or the two-bag package with a note that says the coffee is roasted after you ordered it. Freshness is the thing cafés cannot give her.

Can I add a handwritten message?

Yes. Write it in the note field when you order and I copy it onto the card by hand.
