If he drinks coffee with milk and likes it strong, the moka pot and the dark roast are the gift. They make the kind of coffee that stands up to milk, and the whole thing costs less than a machine that would sit unused.

A small mill you turn by hand. It takes about a minute to grind for one cup.
Ground coffee goes stale in days. Whole beans and a grinder are the single biggest step up in taste, bigger than any brewer. If they already have a grinder, skip this.

For anyone who never finishes a cup while it is warm. The lid matters as much as the steel.

Single-origin arabica from one farm in Karnataka, roasted at home after the order is placed.
The dark roast tastes of chocolate, toasted nuts, and a little smoke that stays after the sip. It makes a thick moka pot coffee and keeps its flavour in milk. If he drinks it black, give the medium roast instead.

Questions people ask
He already has an espresso machine. What then?
Give beans and the grinder. A better grinder improves an espresso machine more than anything else you can buy for it. Two bags of the dark roast and the medium roast are the safe pair.
Is a moka pot hard to use?
No. Water to the valve, coffee in the basket without pressing it down, a low flame, and take it off when it starts to gurgle. The card in the box says exactly this.
Can I have the coffee ground for his brewer?
Yes. When you order, choose how it should be ground, or choose the brewer and I grind for it. Whole beans if he has a grinder.
