Gifts for new parents who need their coffee

Coffee gifts for a new mother or father: coffee made the night before and poured with one hand, a mug that stays hot through a feed, and the roasts that carry a tired morning.

My first son was three weeks old when I started making coffee at four in the morning, badly, with him on my shoulder. I have written about it in the journal. What I wanted then was not a better brewer. It was coffee that was already made.

That is what this page is: gifts for people who will not have two free hands or ten free minutes for a while.

Give them coffee that is already made

Cold brew is the answer. Coarse coffee and water go into a bottle in the fridge at night; in the morning there is a litre of smooth, strong coffee that pours with one hand and lasts a week. Warm it, or pour it over ice, or add milk.

The second answer is an insulated mug, because a new parent never finishes a cup while it is hot.

  1. A cold brew bottle

A glass bottle with a steel mesh core. Coffee goes in the core, water goes in the bottle, and the fridge does the rest overnight.

It makes the only coffee that is ready before the parent is. Eighty grams of coffee and a litre of water make a week of mornings.

    ₹800 to ₹2,500

  2. An insulated mug with a lid

A double-walled steel mug that keeps coffee hot for a few hours.

For anyone who never finishes a cup while it is warm. The lid matters as much as the steel.

    ₹1,200 to ₹4,000

  3. An AeroPress

A plastic cylinder with a plunger and a small paper filter. It brews in about a minute and cleans in ten seconds.

Fast, quiet, almost impossible to break, and it makes a clean, strong cup. The Go version packs into its own mug and fits in a laptop bag.

    ₹3,500 to ₹5,000

  4. A steel milk pitcher and a handheld frother

A small jug with a spout, and a battery whisk that foams warm milk in twenty seconds.

A cappuccino at home needs foamed milk more than it needs a machine. This pair does it for under two thousand rupees.

    ₹700 to ₹2,000 for both

  5. A bag of my dark roast

Single-origin arabica from one farm in Karnataka, roasted at home after the order is placed.

The dark roast makes a cold brew that tastes of chocolate, and it holds up when milk goes in. With the medium roast beside it, there is a coffee for the 5 am and a coffee for the 3 pm.

    ₹750 for 250 g, ₹1,200 for 500 g, shipping free in India

  6. A note about the four o'clock coffee

My journal note on making coffee with a newborn on my shoulder, and why the ten minutes mattered more than the cup.

A gift list can hold one thing that costs nothing. Send them the note with the box.

Questions people ask

Is coffee all right while breastfeeding?

Most guidance puts the limit around 200 mg of caffeine a day, roughly two small cups, and suggests keeping them earlier in the day. A cold brew is strong, so pour a smaller glass. Please ask the doctor rather than a coffee roaster.

How long does cold brew keep?

About a week in the fridge, in a closed bottle. It tastes best in the first four days.

Should the coffee be ground?

Yes, coarse for cold brew. Choose that grind when you order, or choose the cold brew method and I grind for it.
